Garden Tours, Tending our Artistic Growth
Some folks claim there are no seasons in San Diego, but I would beg to differ. When most of the country is hoping for a sign of spring, it is Garden Tour Season here. Many artists feel a periodic need for renewal and it is easy to find inspiration when the buds are bursting and the bright colors appear. I would highly recommend purchasing tickets to one of the many beautiful tours. The money raised supports good causes and who wouldn’t benefit from the exercise and some extra Vitamin D? The earliest scheduled dates tend to be out in Borrego Springs, where the temperatures later in the year are routinely over one hundred degrees. The plants are sculptural scrappers and statuary and shade devices soften the landscape. Some other wonderful tours are in Point Loma, Clairemont, La Jolla and Mission Hills. Gardeners pursue design and color harmonies. They must edit their “canvasses” and work around unexpected difficulties. If they don’t show up to work nearly every day, it is immediately apparent—sounds just like an artist criteria to me. I take my camera and look for backlighting, beautiful rhythms and form, unusual color harmonies as well as creative symbols; all of which contribute to powerful abstract painting!
